HbA1c above 8% Increases Risk For Diabetic Retinopathy

Previous studies have shown that approximately 40% of all diagnosed diabetics have some sort of diabetic retinopathy, and that diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults ages 20 to 74.

More recent studies have been aimed at trying to determine which factors contribute to the inception and progression of retinopathy in patients with diabetes. A study published on January 8, 2011 in the journal of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice has shown that there is a significant correlation in sight threatening diabetic retinopathy to patients that have a glycosolated hemoglobin (HbA1c) above 8%.

As a reference, an HbA1c of 8.0 is the equivalent of an estimated average blood glucose of 180. So, what does this mean for you or someone you know that is diabetic? It means that one of the keys to preserving your vision is to maintain stable, healthy levels of glucose in your blood. The best way to do this is obviously with diet, moderation, and exercising daily. The second best way is to have routine eye exams.

Although adults should have a yearly eye exam, whether they are diabetic or not, it is of utmost importance that you have a dilated retinal exam at least every 12 months if you currently have or previously have had an HbA1c reading of 8.0 or higher.

The doctors at Torrington Eyecare are highly trained in the detection and management of diabetic retinopathy as well as other ocular and retinal diseases. If caught early, there are treatment options available for diabetic retinopathy.

If you are diabetic, we urge you to make an appointment if your last exam was more than 12 months ago.
